This summer, when we asked the Wayne County Treasurer’s Office about the business of selling occupied tax-foreclosed homes at auction, we were told by a spokesperson that “this is the law, [the treasurer is] following the law, it’s not his role to go in and change the law on this.” While Treasurer Eric Sabree has claimed on many occasions that he’s doing all he can to help stem the tide of tax foreclosure that has displaced tens of thousands of Detroiters, it appears it is ultimately this “my-hands-are-tied” mantra that guides the actions of his office.…
